GRIT: A Story We Built Together – Emrah Baki Başoğlu

Sometimes, the unexpected turning points in our lives lead us down paths we had never imagined. The story of GRIT (Growth through Research, Innovation, and Technology) began just like that. But this is not merely a story of personal struggle — it’s a story rooted in the potential we all carry within ourselves, and the desire to create a space where that potential can truly flourish.

About nine years ago, I was in a life-altering traffic accident. I was bedridden for a time and faced a long, difficult journey to walk again. That period of hardship taught me the value of resilience — and how discovering our inner strength can help us overcome even the toughest obstacles. During that time, a book titled GRIT by Angela Duckworth arrived at my hospital room, sent by my dear advisor Evrim Baran. That book didn’t just strengthen the hope and perseverance already within me — it gave a name to my growing desire to step outside my personal recovery and contribute meaningfully to the lives of others.

These challenges helped me realize a powerful truth: within every person lies a remarkable strength and creativity, just waiting to be unlocked under the right conditions and support. Around me, I saw many dedicated educators — people full of passion for their work — whose circumstances limited their ability to realize their full potential. The spark that became GRIT was born in that very realization.

When I envisioned GRIT, the goal was never to amplify just one person’s journey. It was to create, starting from my immediate circle, a shared transformation in education. From day one, we moved forward with the energy and motivation of fellow educators around me. What makes this initiative powerful is the idea that each individual, by discovering their own potential, can shine a light for others. My hope is that GRIT continues to grow through the strength of collective creativity, collaboration, and solidarity.

Today, GRIT is a volunteer-driven network that supports educators and researchers who are navigating limitations while striving for equity in education. Within this network, we work both independently and collaboratively to develop projects, share knowledge, and grow together. Every initiative within GRIT is built through the spirit of volunteerism and the commitment of individuals who are dedicated to creating social good. What we value most is the opportunity to touch the lives of those who hold great promise in the fields of education and research but often lack the means to be heard.

That’s why GRIT is not just a name — it’s a shared story of resilience, hope, and transformation.

Looking back now, I realize that the challenges we face are often the catalysts that awaken our hidden potential. The most important thing I’ve learned from my own journey is that our strength and purpose as human beings are measured by how deeply we can impact the lives of others. GRIT is built on this very belief — a mosaic of different lives and stories coming together with a common purpose.

Perhaps, in each of our journeys, what is truly meaningful is not the loudest voices that rise alone, but the quiet, determined steps we take together.
